Love Taps on the Wall by Doris C. Crandall There is no surprise more magical than the surprise of being loved. It is the finger of God on a (person's) shoulder. ~Charles Morgan Every day my strong, healthy daddy worked in the fields from sunup until sundown to make a living for Mother, my sisters, and me on a rented cotton farm in the Texas Panhandle. At times, his voice became gruff as if he were aggravated with me. I felt he didn't love me. One day Daddy had a fever. He stayed in bed in his room. The next day I contracted the same thing and stayed home from school. Mother put me to bed in my room which was next to Daddy's. We had no radio, and my eyes hurt too much to read, so I whiled away the long hours by mentally drawing circles and squares on the ceiling. Mother, busy as usual, came upstairs only to bring medicine, but didn't stay long.
